Dairy or Not?

The other day my sister posted a note on fb about drinking cows milk, and eating all dairy in general. I'm going to post it because I really believe in it and I think there's a lot that people don't know or realize about it! I myself don't drink regular milk anymore, just soy, rice, or almond milk. It works as a perfect substitute for ally my recipes too. A nutritionist told me that we actually don't need to drink milk to have strong and healthy bones. As long as you are getting your calcium from somewhere, you are OK. On that note, the average Canadian drinks way more milk than they need to. How many people do you know that will drink a glass of milk for dinner or breakfast every day? My stomach gets really sick when I drink it and I have stomach pains for a few hours and then indigestion following...ick. As for cheese and yogurt, it is harder to give those up since I LOVE yogurt in the mornings and cheese..well cheese is cheese! Cheese I can eat in small amounts, but yogurt is harder. Off and on, yogurt won't sit well with me. Milk however, is a never fail. Plus, I really don't mind all the calories that I'm not injesting from the fat. :) Here's her take on it..

I have known for a few years now that milk is a poor source of calcium and not at all an essential part of our human diets. Recently I stumbled across an informative bit of information about milk which spurred me on to do more research. I quickly learned why milk is not only a poor source of protein but actually bad for human consumption! I only buy soymilk but I still drink 2% when I'm at other people's houses and have probably never drank more milk than I have been since moving here and being around Peter's family, who all drink tons of milk every day. From today onward I am going to stop eating and drinking dairy products and here are some of the facts that explain why:

Drinking cows milk is not natural. Of all mammals, only humans continue to drink milk beyond babyhood. Once we reach maturity we are supposed to eat fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts...etc. Milk is only supposed to be consumed by babies and from the same species.

Consider for a moment, if it was possible, to drink the milk of a mammal other than a cow, let's say a rat. Or perhaps the milk of a dog would be more to your liking. Possibly some horse milk or cat milk. Do you get the idea? Well, I'm not serious about this, except to suggest that human milk is for human infants, dogs' milk is for pups, cows' milk is for calves, cats' milk is for kittens, and so forth. Clearly, this is the way nature intends it. Just use your own good judgement on this one.

Milk is not just milk. The milk of every species of mammal is unique and specifically tailored to the requirements of that animal. For example, cows' milk is very much richer in protein than human milk. Three to four times as much. It has five to seven times the mineral content. However, it is markedly deficient in essential fatty acids when compared to human mothers' milk. Mothers' milk has six to ten times as much of the essential fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. (Incidentally, skimmed cow's milk has no linoleic acid). It simply is not designed for humans.

Cows are pumped full of hormones to make them produce way more milk than they normally would. Not only do those hormones go into the milk we drink all commercial milk from cows contains pus and blood. The USDA actually sets allowable limits of pus as a federal standard. (Ewww!!)

Animal protein inhibits our bodies from absorbing calcium. So even if milk is high in calcium, because it is liquid animal protein, we absorb very little of the calcium. In fact, studies show milk robs our bones of calcium.
On a list of 100 best sources of calcium, cows milk is down at #50. At the top of the list is seeds, nuts, leafy greens, seaweed... so gram for gram, milk is way down at 50! Why are so many people deceived? Advertising. Milk/dairy companies advertise like crazy to get people to buy the myth that cows milk is good for them and even an essential part of every persons diet. NOT TRUE!!

Milk and dairy products actually increase our risk of osteoporosis.

Calcium loss from the bones is promoted by high intakes of animal protein. By the age of 80, vegetarians tend to have lost less bone mineral compared to omnivores. Research suggests that the more animal protein you eat, the higher your risk of hip fracture becomes. Cross-cultural studies show strong links between a high animal protein diet, bone degeneration and the occurrence of hip fractures. In a rural community in China where most of the protein in the diet came from plant foods rather than animal foods, the fracture rate was one-fifth of that in the US.

There are so many more facts and reasons to further explain and educate but if you are really interested in your health I'll let you do the research for yourself. After all, you probably won't believe it until you read it with your own eyes. Below I've posted just a few links with further information.
